Movie Review: Seventh Son

I just had some time to finish my movie list and decided to catch up on Seventh Son. I haven't watched the trailer yet nor heard about anything related to the plot. As I looked at the movie poster, I thought this would be like an action/war like movie? I thought there will be like this kind of country against another and they have their seventh son stands for them and saves the country. Turned out I was wrong, so here's some reviews for the movie.

So, the movie starts with a young man named Gregory (played by Jeff Bridges) and he's imprisoning a woman, whom I thought at first is his mother (idk maybe this is related to the 'son' thing. i know this is stupid lol) Gregory is a spook, whose job is to hunt the witches. Years passed and suddenly, that woman turned into a beast (from how the voice changed). In the next scene, the man of my dream, Kit Harington (who played as Jon Snow in GOT) appeared on the screen and I was like screaming inside, a little bit happy because I haven't seen him since his death in GOT ;) He played as Mr. Bradley, who was the best apprentice Gregory has ever had. My mind kept telling me that he's the seventh son since he came to the bar and acted so brave and cool when walking up to the old Gregory. AND ONCE AGAIN I FAILED AND SADLY HE DIED!!! (one more time I witnessed his death... idk maybe he's destined to play dead in every movie?!) Alright, before jumping to the death, he told Gregory that the bell was ringing, which meant that something happened related to dark spells, and the only one left in the town to save the victim is Gregory. Briefly, they went to the building and Gregory did his magic spell to cast out the evil possessed in the little girl's body. And that's when the evil started to communicate with him, asking him if he's forgotten her. And that's when I realized that the evil is the woman who is imprisoned in the first scene. Idk I thought that she was a dragon at first? Because at the first scene she was like flying out through the lock door and broke it with her enormous strong body of dragon, and now she's a spirit possessing people? Idk I still didn't get it at first that this is a story about witchcraft. Sorry...
After a short fight, they succeeded in catching Mother Malkin (name of that wicked witch) and threw her into the cage to be burned. Unfortunately she got Bradley (Kit Harrington) into the cage and took his spirit away. Gregory couldn't do anything but to burn the cage but turned out Mother Malkin could escape and turned herself into a dragon then flew away. I heard Gregory said that it's ten years of waste and then I was like YES WHY DO YOU HAVE TO BURN BRADLEY?!?!?!
Moving on to the next scene (i don't wanna spill out much here) there is another hot guy named Tom Ward (Ben Barnes) and briefly he was picked by Gregory as his apprentice to face Mother Malkin. So this Mr. Ward has this kind of ability to have vision of the future. And he's seen Gregory, and a girl named Alice (Alicia Vikander) in it. He met Alice in the city while she was caught by citizens as a witch. Tom wanted to help her but he admitted to the citizens that he was Gregory's apprentice and he would finish this girl by himself. Moving on to the first night with Gregory, he told Tom to stay in his room but at night Tom heard somebody calling out for help so he went out from his room. Turned out it's the test Gregory set for him and he failed. The second test is to use the magic wand but still because he lacked of skills and experiences, he failed.
In a nutshell, a witch named Urag, one of Malkin's followers was captured. When Gregory asked Tom to burn Urag, Tom felt that it wasn't right. So he left and met Alice. Turned out Alice is the daughter of Malkin's follower, which made her a witch. But Tom fell in love with her, so does Alice. They had a wonderful moment together but Tom suddenly had a vision of Gregory being killed by Malkin. And he knew that he must be there to save Gregory.
Gregory, Tom, and Tusk (Gregory's assistant) went for a long journey to face Mother Malkin. In between, Alice was there, meeting Tom and asked him to leave with her. But they were caught by Gregory and as a spook, he told Tom to kill her. But Tom, who was in love with Alice, protected her and let her go without realizing that she has stolen the necklace Tom's mother has given to him. The necklace got the power to destroy Malkin. Tom then chased Alice into the woods, followed by Gregory and Tusk.
Gregory then captured by Malkin's follower, Radu. There, Malkin tried to seduce Gregory with her magic and almost succeeded before Alice pulled away the necklace (which was the source of her power). Malkin was surprised and turned herself into a dragon and chased Alice. Alice's mother would not let her daughter killed, and had a fierce fight with Malkin in the air. Gregory arrived and asked Alice about his necklace, and Alice told him that she did it to protect him. But one of Radu's minions caught them and the fight began. With the necklace and the magic wand on his hand, Tom fought all the minions and also the witches by burning them.
Malkin was left alone and walked into the building, losing most of her power when she fought in the air. Gregory told Tom that he would finish this alone. Malkin asked Gregory if he's once loved her and Gregory said yes. But now it has changed into hatred. When he took out the blade, Malkin used rest of her power to kill Gregory. But fortunately, Tom threw the blade right to Malkin's stomach and burned her with the magic wand. Last word slipped from Malkin's tongue, "I will haunt you" (IT WAS TOTALLY SCARY)
In the end, Tom decided to be a spook. Knowing that they couldn't be together, Alice had to let Tom go, but she made Tom sure that they'd meet again someday. I just wish she didn't turn like Malkin... Gregory left Tom and his new assistant, Tusk with his new job. And the bell striked...

Total duration of this movie is 102 minutes and the rating itself in IMDb is 5.5/10. I myself consider this is kind of my movie because I love witchcraft thingy, and I also love Gregory's character here, where somehow a cold person is shown smiling and laughing at the middle of the scene. I just kinda regret I watched it so late... For myself, I'll give this 8/10! :) Looking forward to finish the next move in my list! But I have to sleep now because I have class tomorrow, so bye! ;)
